The last night I stayed in Aberdeen, I didn't stay there. I got back to town later than I had intended, about 8:30. It turned out there was a Super-sized Walmart opening the next day and every hotel room in town was booked. This is not a 1-or-2 hotel town. Clearly, these folk are big on shopping and a new Walmart opening up is something not to be missed.

The closest town with a hotel was 45 miles away. I set off. The town had two hotels... all booked up. The next closest town was Huron, 45 miles further. That adds up to 90 miles extra to drive for a hotel just because Walmart was opening a new store. Huron boasts the largest pheasant in the world. I think it was staring into my window the whole night.

This is the giant pheasant of Huron, South Dakota. They claim it is the world's largest pheasant. it probably is.
OLD BARN

an outbuilding in South Dakota
WHAT NO ROOF?

Something happened to the roof and front porch of this house... Perhaps they are adding on.

barn with pond

Two barns backed by a hill

A weary white house in South Dakota

two farm buildings and a broken windmill

There is not much teaching or learning going on inside this old school house. The window frames are interesting though.

A once-white house sports a red door. It is open and welcoming. perhaps the farmer takes his coffee breaks here.

An old barn with orange lichen on it.

A pair of houses on the South Dakota plains.

"There's a red house over yonder..." So say the song lyrics. Is this might be the house where "My baby" is staying? Hmmm... high class broad.

It looks like they had been storing their dead cars along this berm for years when a section of it washed out.

the Fawn Motel in Pierre, South Dakota has the coolest sign in town. the Motel might seem a little weary on the outside, but the room I stayed in was clean and newly redone on the inside.
